What Is Dry Needling?

The technique involves inserting a very thin, sterile needle into specific areas of muscle or soft tissue. Unlike an injection, nothing is injected into the body. The needle itself is used as part of the treatment.

Dry needling may be considered when tight or sensitive areas of muscle are contributing to discomfort or limiting movement.

Depending on what we find during your evaluation, it can be used in different areas of the body, including the neck, shoulders, back, hips, legs, feet, and ankles.

How Can Dry Needling Help?

The purpose of dry needling isn’t simply to treat the spot where something hurts.

At Sisu Physical Therapy, we look at how that area fits into the bigger picture of how your body moves.

Dry needling may be used to help:

  • Address areas of muscle tightness
  • Reduce muscular discomfort
  • Improve mobility
  • Support better movement
  • Complement exercise and rehabilitation
  • Help you progress toward your activity goals

It may be particularly useful when muscle tightness or sensitivity is making certain movements more difficult.

However, dry needling isn’t automatically the right choice for everyone. That’s why we start by understanding what’s happening before deciding which treatment techniques could be appropriate.

Our Approach To Dry Needling?

At Sisu Physical Therapy, dry needling is not designed to be a standalone quick fix.

Our goal is to understand why you’re experiencing difficulty in the first place.

We begin with a thorough evaluation of your movement, symptoms, lifestyle, and goals. If dry needling is appropriate, we can incorporate it into a broader treatment plan alongside movement, exercise, strength work, and other strategies.

Ultimately, the goal isn’t simply to help you feel different when you leave the clinic.

It’s to help you make progress toward what matters outside of it.

Whether that means returning to running, CrossFit, HYROX, pickleball, golf, skating, working out, or keeping up with your family, everything we do is centered around helping you move forward and play life better.
