What Is Knee Pain?

Sometimes knee pain appears after an injury or increase in activity. Other times, there may not be an obvious reason why it started.

The discomfort might be at the front of the knee, along either side, or feel like it is coming from deeper within the joint itself.

Whatever the location, knee pain can become frustrating when it starts interfering with everyday movement.

For someone who enjoys running, it might mean cutting a run short. For others, it could make pickleball, golf, skating, lifting weights, or simply getting around more difficult.

Our goal is to understand what’s happening and help you work toward getting back to the activities that matter to you.

What are the symptoms of Knee Pain?

Knee pain can feel different depending on the person and what may be contributing to the problem.

Some common symptoms include:

  • Sharp discomfort when going up or down stairs
  • A dull or persistent ache around the knee
  • Pain at the front or sides of the knee
  • Difficulty getting up after sitting
  • Stiffness when first starting to move
  • Discomfort when squatting or lifting
  • Knee pain during or after running
  • Difficulty walking longer distances
  • Discomfort during sports or exercise

Knee pain can also affect movements you might not immediately associate with the knee.

Squatting, for example, isn’t only something that happens in the gym. You squat when you sit in a chair, get off the toilet, pick something up, or lower yourself toward the floor.

When those everyday movements become difficult, knee pain can have a much bigger impact on your life.

What Is Our Approach To Treating Knee Pain?

If knee pain has been around for a while, you may have already tried resting or reducing your activity.

Perhaps you’ve visited a doctor, received an injection, tried physical therapy, chiropractic care, acupuncture, or another approach. Yet the knee still doesn’t feel the way you want it to.

At Sisu Performance Physical Therapy, we start by looking beyond the knee itself.

During your initial evaluation, we take the time to understand your symptoms, movement, activity levels, and personal goals. We’ll also assess the joints above and below the knee because how your hips, ankles, and the rest of your body move can influence what happens at the knee.

From there, we develop an individualized plan designed around what you want to achieve.

Rather than immediately jumping back into everything you used to do, we can progressively reintroduce movements and activities over time.

Whether the goal is walking farther, squatting, returning to running, lifting, playing pickleball, golfing, skating, or keeping up with your family, your plan is built around helping you get there.
